Since 2014 UniGe manage its approach to environmental sustainability by following a voluntary agreement for the quantification of its Carbon Footprint within the Program for the evaluation of the environmental footprint launched by the former Ministry of the Environment.
The Carbon Footprint, one of the tools usedin carbon management polices, consists in the calculation of the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), in terms of tons of CO2 emitted, associated with the services provided by the University of Genoa.  The GHG inventory calculations is performed by the Center for the Development of Sustainability of Products (CESISP) of the University of Genoa. 

The main actions envisaged are the following: 
- Analysis of energy consumption, waste management and transport system; 
- Calculation of the GHG emissions related to these activities; 
- Identification of improvement actions and monitoring.

UniGe defines the year 2013 as the baseline, the year in which the first inventory of Scope 1 and 2 emissions is carried out, in order to compare the emissions trend over the years. 

In 2016 the first University of GHG Inventory for 2013 and 2014 has been certified by RINA Services, in compliance to the standard ISO 14064-1. The last GHG inventory subjected to verification by a third-party Certification Body for compliance with the ISO14064-1 standard is related to the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 (SEE ATTACHMENTS). 
The GHG inventory for 2020 - 2022 has been defined and is being submitted to certification (May 2024).

The UniGe carbon footprint certification represents the basis for the definition of the UniGe Climate Strategy.
