Sustainability Policies
In the 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, UniGe Governance explicitly expresses its commitment to the 2030 Agenda and identifies Sustainability as one of the strategic pillars guiding the development of its institutional missions, alongside Innovation, Inclusion, Internationalization, and Quality.
UniGe has also made a strong commitment against climate change, and in 2022, it defined its Climate Strategy 2022-2030, which will be followed by a Plan outlining the actions to be taken to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
The achievement of this ambitious goal also involves improving the energy efficiency of UniGe buildings and systems, through actions outlined in the Three-Year Public Works Program (see 2025-2027 Program) and the Technical and Economic Plan of the Integrated Energy Service SIE4, an integrated management of the services for buildings aimed at rationalizing and optimizing performance in energy consumption.
UniGe's commitment to reducing its environmental impact is also reflected in the University-House Mobility Plan (PSCU), which, in its 2024 update, includes a set of 10 initiatives in favor of sustainable mobility: promoting local public transport, discouraging private car use, reducing mobility demand, and supporting cycling and walking.
Sustainable Investments
In recent years, several investments with clear sustainability goals in both environmental and social areas have been launched, based on these sustainability strategies and policies, such as:
- The provision of certified green electricity from renewable sources for all university consumption since 2019;
- Energy retrofitting interventions on buildings and systems, aimed at achieving energy saving and emission reduction goals, including the construction of a nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB);
- Targeted investments to promote sustainable mobility for students and staff, including free public transport passes for first-year students and discounts for other categories, as well as the installation of bicycle racks at UniGe campuses.
- The installation of free filtered tap water dispensers, alongside the free distribution of reusable water bottles to promote the reduction of single-use plastic (Plastic Free campaign);
- The concession of the Savona Campus canteen based on quality and low environmental impact criteria, recognized by the special mention in the Buygreen Award – Green Canteen;
- The sustainable choices of Genova University Press (GUP), whose printing services have been entrusted to an Eco-print certified printing house, which employs incarcerated individuals for bookbinding, aiming at social inclusion and workforce reintegration;
- The supply of a line of sustainable products for the University store, UniGe Store, as part of a circular economy project in collaboration with Creazioni al Fresco - Sc'Art. The items are handmade by people in detention using repurposed UniGe events' banners.
