The project URCA! Urban Resilience to Climate Change: to Activate participatory mapping and decision support tool for enhancing the sustainable urban drainage continues to contribute to the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable management of the stormwater, providing practical tools to strengthen urban resilience towards climate change.
Some of the main accomplishments are:
- Guidelines for the adoption of innovative solution concerning sustainable urban drainage;
- a Policy Brief dedicated to the stakeholders' involvement in the design process of the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS);
- a Decision Support System (DSS) for the planning and implementation of sustainable urban drainage actions.
Anna Palla, professor at the Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the University of Genoa and national coordinator for the URCA! project, has presented the accomplishments related to the project at numerous scientific and institutional events, such as:
- The "Innovation, Sustainability and Resilience in the Urban Draining System" conference held in Bologna in October 2025.
- The fourth meetup of the Interreg Euro-MED project, “ReMED – Towards Climate Resilient Mediterranean Cities”, held at the Genova Blue District in October 2025.
- The study day dedicated to the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in relation to the PRIN “ENVISION” project, organised by CNR IRSA in Verbania in February 2026.
The project has also gained international recognition. Enrico Creaco (representative for the University of Pavia) illustrated the scientific results related to the Decision Support System for sustainable urban drainage planning at the 13th Urban Drainage Modelling Conference in Innsbruck and during the CSDU-CSSI Days 2025 in Trieste. Alberto Campisano (Representative for the University of Catania) also discussed the experimental results in the Blue Roof carried out at the University of Catania during the Novatech International Conference 2026 in Lyon.
Thanks to these achievements and their considerable outreach in the national scientific context, URCA renews its contribution to the developments of strategies and innovative tools for a more sustainable urban water management and for building more resilient cities.
The project URCA! Urban Resilience to Climate Change: to Activate participatory mapping and decision support tool for enhancing the sustainable urban drainage addresses urban resilience as a component for urban sustainability in relation to at least two goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda: Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 13 - Climate Change.
The University of Genoa, with the Hydraulic Engineering staff of the Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (Anna Palla, Ilaria Gnecco), in collaboration with the technical and urban planning (Francesca Pirlone, Ilenia Spadaro) spearheads the project, which also involves the University of Brescia, the University of Calabria, the University of Catania and the University of Pavia. The University of Bologna and the University of Basilicata collaborate on the project too.
