The University of Genoa (UniGe) has established a 2022-2030 UniGe Climate Strategy as part of its Sustainability Policies. This strategy was developed by the Environmental Sustainability Commission and approved by the Board of Directors in 2022.
Based on the the UniGe greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory certified in 2021, the strategy defines a pathway to reduce both:
- Direct emissions, generated by the burning of fossil fuels, and
- Indirect emissions, related to electricity consumption.
It also identifies targeted actions to address additional indirect emissions, including those associated with mobility, waste, water consumption, and procurement.
In November 2025, UniGe further strengthened its commitment by approving its Climate Action Plan, by the Sustainability Commission and approved by the Board of Directors.
This plan includes two main components:
- a climate change mitigation plan, which sets out the actions and timeline to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, with short- and medium-term targets and long-term objectives towards net-zero emissions.
- a climate change adaptation plan, aimed at enhancing UniGe’s resilience and capacity to respond to ongoing climate change, based on the Liguria Region’s Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (SRACC) and complemented by university-specific procedures to be adopted during weather alerts and guidelines to prevent risks related to extreme temperature exposure.
