UniGe has made a strong commitment against climate change.

Together with a few other Italian Universities, UniGe obtained accreditation from the UNFCCC already in 2010 to participate in the work of the United Nations on the climate, including the COP21 held in Paris in December 2015 with the signing of the historic Paris Agreement on the containment of global warming.

Since 2014, following the voluntary agreement signed by the University and the Ministry of the Environment, UniGe quantifies its inventory of greenhouse gas emissions by measuring its carbon footprint annually.

In 2019 UniGe joined the UN global campaign "Race To Zero for Universities and colleges" and "The Sustainable Development Goals Accord", an initiative coordinated by the Youth and Education Alliance of the UN Environment.
In the same year, UniGe joined the Climate Emergency declaration and signed a letter of intent that lists 10 good practices and actions, including the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030.

This commitment provides for the definition of a Climate Strategy, and subsequently a plan, which identifies the path and actions that will be taken to achieve climate neutrality in 2030, foreseeing intermediate targets in the short and medium term, and setting long-term goals towards net zero emissions.

The 2022-2030 UniGe Climate Strategy was defined by the Environmental Sustainability Commission and approved by the Board of Directors in 2022. The strategy, starting from the latest UniGe greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory certified in 2021, outlines a path to reduce direct emissions, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and indirect ones related to the consumption of electricity. The strategy also provides for the identification of specific actions to reduce other indirect emissions, including those related to mobility, waste, water consumption and purchases.

UniGe carbon reduction target is also reported in other ufficial documents and particularly in:

- the 2022-2024 Three-Year Program. The reduction of annual greenhouse gas emissions is one of the indicators used to measure the achievement of one of its goals (GOAL 9 Promote development actions and processes in favor of sustainability and inclusion and the acquisition of transversal skills for entrepreneurship and active citizenship / Action 9.3 Improve the management of the University in terms of environmental sustainability / Indicator 1 - Annual greenhouse gas emissions).

- the Integrated Plan of Activities and Organization 2022-2024 (PIAO), The annual greenhouse gas emissions is one of the indicators used to measure the achievement of its operational objectives.
