Italian-Ukrainian Symposium on Environmental Constitutionalism

The Italian-Ukrainian Symposium on Environmental Constitutionalism, organised by the Department of Law and the Department of Political and International Sciences (DiSPI) of the University of Genoa, is the first opportunity for academic discussion between Italian and Ukrainian scholars on the subject of environmental constitutionalism.

The aim of the conference is to compare the different legal, theoretical and jurisprudential positions that confront each other on the subject.
The theme is addressed from two distinct angles. The first, to which the first session, chaired by Lorenzo Cuocolo, is dedicated, is that of environmental constitutionalism from the perspective of the European Union, international law and the European Convention on Human Rights. The second, to which the second session is dedicated, chaired by Eleonora Ceccherini, focuses on environmental protection according to the models of environmental constitutionalism in Italy and Ukraine. In 2022, these two countries saw, respectively, a constitutional reform focusing precisely on environmental protection and a large-scale invasion that has caused, and continues to cause, devastation, including from an environmental point of view.

Alongside professors from the University of Genoa Francesco Munari, Stefano Dominelli, Francesco Gallarati, Simone Pitto and Enrico Albanesi, Claudia Sartoretti from the University of Turin and three Ukrainian professors from the Department of Environmental Law at Yaroslav Mudryi University in Kharkiv will also be present.
The debate will conclude with a round table discussion with several Ukrainian stakeholders, connected remotely, for an in-depth analysis of the topic.

The event is one of many collaborations between the Department of Law at the University of Genoa and Ukrainian universities and institutions, including the signing in October 2024 of a Memorandum of Understanding on good law writing with the Research Service of the Ukrainian Parliament, and academic initiatives carried out in Ukraine over the last two years by Enrico Albanesi.
