UniGe at COP30 - Partnership Platform on Localizing the SDGs

The University of Genoa, represented by Vice-Rector for Sustainability Adriana Del Borghi, has been invited to take part in the event "Partnership Platform on Localizing the SDGs: Integrating Sport into Sustainable and Climate-Smart Urban Development”, at COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025.

Jointly organized by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the event will be held at the Cities and Regions Hub of COP30 on Wednesday, November 12, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m (local time).

It will bring together representatives from national and local governments, the sports sector, and development partners to explore how sport can be leveraged as a catalyst for sustainable local development and climate action. It will also highlight the role of the Partnership Platform on Localizing the SDGs, jointly implemented by MASE and UN-Habitat and embedded in the UN-Habitat’s new Strategic Plan 2026-2029, in Italy’s National and territorial sustainable development strategies, and in the Local2030 Coalition, the UN-System wide initiative on Localizing the SDG.

In the panel dedicated to the role of sport in sustainable urban planning, in dialogue with representatives from governments, cities, and financial institutions, Adriana Del Borghi will present UniGe’s contribution in terms of research, innovation, and regional collaboration, highlighting how sport can become a driving force for regeneration and inclusion in the cities of the future.

Since 2015, the University of Genoa has participated annually as an accredited observer at the COPs, the United Nations Conferences of the Parties where member countries discuss strategies to achieve the global climate objectives established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COP30 is particularly significant as it marks the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol and the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

UniGe, represented by the Vice Rector for Sustainability Adriana Del Borghi, will also take part in two other events. Learn more on the University magazine, UniGe.life, and on the dedicated page of the UniGe Sostenibile website.
