Climate Change: Tor Paterno Shoals Marine Protected Area

With the installation of 𝟗 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 on the seabed of the , work began on the project entitled Resistance and Resilience of the Marine Protected Area to the Effects of Climate Change, which the RomaNatura Regional Authority entrusted to 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐚̀ 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢 𝐝𝐢 𝐆 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚.

This monitoring will make it possible to assess the frequency of underwater heat waves and their effects on benthic organisms, which are fundamental to the health of marine ecosystems.

The effects of climate change can alter the structure of marine ecosystems, even in MPAs, making protection measures less effective. For this reason, RomaNatura wants to understand whether the ecosystems of the Secche di Tor Paterno MPA are already showing signs of stress or whether the area could represent a potential climate refuge.

The data collected will not only be useful for improving the management of the MPA, but will also be fed into the ‘𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐨’ network, the national program promoted by 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 to monitor the effects of warming in Italian seas.
