The University of Genoa is hosting an event to present the City Nature Challenge, an international citizen science competition dedicated to documenting urban biodiversity.
The City Nature Challenge is a global initiative that involves communities around the world in collecting naturalistic data on flora, fauna, and other organisms living in urban areas. Every year, as part of a collaborative bioblitz, hundreds of cities mobilize to observe, photograph, and record wildlife species using the free iNaturalist app, thus contributing to scientific knowledge of biodiversity and the monitoring of local ecosystems.
The presentation meeting in Genoa aims to offer an overview of the initiative's objectives, how to participate, and its scientific impact, illustrating how to transform simple naturalistic observation into useful data for research. The event represents an opportunity for the entire university community and anyone interested in understanding how participatory science can contribute to environmental protection and the study of nature in urban areas.
The event, organized by Loris Galli and Stefano Ferretti, professors in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences (DISTAV), will be held on February 25, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in room C4.01 of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences (DISTAV), c.so Europa 26, Genoa.
