Management Engineering and Food: research and training for food sustainability

On February 5, 2026, for National Food Waste Prevention Day, the Ricibo Network will present its 2025 report, featuring data, analysis, and perspectives on food waste and poverty in Genoa and Italy.

Silvia Massa, professor at the Department of Mechanical, Energy, Management and Transport Engineering (DIME) at the University of Genoa, will speak on behalf of UniGe. The collaboration between the Ricibo Project and the Management Engineering Department of the University of Genoa has given rise to a structured series of research activities, theses, and internships on the topics of food waste, surplus recovery, and the development of local food policies.
Under the guidance of Silvia Massa, in collaboration with Ricibo, students enrolled in bachelor's and master's degree programs participate in analysis projects, reports, and events involving the third sector and local institutions, with the aim of producing useful knowledge that has an impact on the local area. The research starts from concrete problems, such as the high production of food surpluses and the growing phenomenon of food poverty, and links to challenges of European relevance such as the right to food, the sustainability of supply chains, and the effectiveness of public policies. Over time, the work has expanded from analyzing waste and the impacts of recovery to studying redistribution models, urban food policies, and, more recently, the issues of short supply chains and sustainability in the primary sector. In this process, management engineering skills are central to analyzing complex data, processes, and organizational models.

“Synergies with organizations such as Ricibo and Terra!” says Silvia Massa, “allow us to put research and training at the service of the city, contributing to the development of more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive food systems.”
