Plastic Free

In 2018, the University of Genoa accepted the invitation from the Ministry of the Environment, which was directed at companies and public administration bodies, to become “plastic-free,” as well as the call from the CRUI (Conference of Italian University Rectors), by developing initiatives to reduce single-use plastic.

Starting with the 2020–2021 academic year, “Water Bottle Days” have been organized annually across our different departments. These are days during which personalized water bottles featuring the university logo are distributed free of charge to all new students and university staff.

During the 2025/2026 academic year, 28 “Water Bottle Days” were organized.

For the University of Genoa, these initiatives are of great importance due to their educational value and their role in raising awareness about sustainability issues. Other actions taken by the University include the installation of tap water dispensers connected to the municipal water supply and awareness-raising activities aimed at students, faculty, and technical-administrative staff regarding the importance of reducing plastic pollution.
