Throughout the second semester of the 24/25 academic year, the Italian Secretary of Medical Students (SISM) offered the opportunity for twenty people registered with the association to participate in a 20-hour training course concerning Italian Sign Language (LIS).
The project was developed to provide the necessary basics, for communicating and interacting withdeaf people or deaf-blind people, to the upcoming Medical students. The idea for the project came from the lack of courses dedicated to studying or raising awareness on the subject.
The possibility of offering the course again in the coming years is being considered, by increasing the number of hours and trying to propose, in addition to a new basic course, an advanced teaching module for those who had already participated at the first edition.
The hope is that more and more healthcare people will be able to communicate with deaf and deaf-blind patients.
