Overtourism is the saturation of tourism beyond the carrying capacity of a place: according to ISTAT data, in 2024 Italy exceeded 450 million tourist arrivals; It is not just an aesthetic or logistical problem: it is a cultural, social, and environmental issue, which is why Genoa's University has designed a course of study to train new professionals capable of managing tourism in a sustainable way with the master's degree course “Valorization of Territories and Sustainable Tourism.”
The course is multidisciplinary, with studies in geography, economics, and tourism marketing, legal concepts, in-depth study of foreign languages, and psychology, communication skills will also be taught. All new knowledge will be put into practice through workshops dedicated to territorial planning.
The goal is to build sustainable tourism promotion strategies that combine different areas of knowledge and focus on communities and the historical, cultural, and landscape heritage of the territories.
There are three possible choices:
- Designer and territorial mediator - Works in local and national public bodies or private entities active in the field of territorial enhancement and management.
- Expert in territorial communication - Works in publishing (books, magazines) or in the television and multimedia sector.
- Geographer and territorial mediator - Works in institutes for the conservation of cultural heritage or public and private entities in tourism and heritage management.
