Impact+: waste management in construction

On 1 February 2025, IMPACT+* was launched, a project to tackle waste management in the construction industry.
The construction sector is one of the most affected by the challenges of sustainable development because it has a significant impact on the environment throughout the supply chain: from production to renovation and disposal.
The housing sector plays a crucial role, as it is possible to take action on energy consumption, raw materials and waste generation. In this context, the circular economy represents a real strategic lever for promoting truly sustainable development.

The IMPACT+ project aims to implement cross-border action plans for sustainable construction.

The main goals of IMPACT+ are:
1.    to take stock of current practices and map available solutions for companies in the PACA region (06 and 83), Corsica, Liguria, Tuscany and Sardinia;
2.    to provide tools for assessing construction waste management and information tools through the creation of a digital platform;
3.    to offer companies in the construction sector the opportunity to participate in training/pilot projects;
4.    to model best practices in construction companies to ensure wider dissemination of key activities, validated by industry professionals;
5.    to promote the Intangible Waste Management Centre created as part of the project to ensure its sustainability among operators in the construction and public works sector.

UniGe plays a central role in developing tools and best practices for sustainable construction waste management, thanks to its study, research and experimentation activities, which also involve strategic players at the urban and Italian-French cross-border level.
The project was officially launched on 3 and 4 April 2025 in Saint Laurent du Var, at the headquarters of CMA PACA, while the last Steering Committee meeting was recently held in Lucca.
Among the first activities of the IMPACT+ project was the launch of a call for expressions of interest for free access to training services for the development of skills in construction waste management.
The aim is to increase the skills of companies and operators in the sector so that they can integrate new processes to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.
The training programme focuses on the management of construction and demolition waste and will be delivered through a variety of training methods to facilitate the participation of companies and professionals and to draw on the expertise of the project partners, experiences and good practices in the cross-border area.
